So for the past 10 minutes I’ve been scouring YouTube for some Shania Twain dance remixes because Today is Your Day is kind of a ballad…

Unfortunately, most of the ones posted sound exactly the same as (and in some cases, worse than) the original forms because there’s just a simple dance beat on top.

I Love LOVE?: A Review

Two years ago when Epic Records first announced Jennifer Lopez‘ new album Love?, JLo’s career was stalling. The album’s original lead single, Louboutins was a huge flop just like the “buzz” single Fresh Out the Oven. Then, her movie The Back Up Plan was widely panned the following year. In fact, her biggest hit during that dark period was when she hit the floor at the American Music Awards:

However with a new record label (Island Def Jam), a fresh career move (American Idol) and a massive worldwide comeback hit (On the Floor), JLo is officially back!

She continues her hot streak, in my opinion, with Love? - her seventh studio album. It’s a fantastic effort and a stunning return to form for this Grammy-nominated artist (although I think I was one of the ten people who actually liked 2007′s Brave).

ON THE FLOOR (feat. Pitbull) (4/5) — This is like JLo’s Spinning Around. It’s deservingly one of the biggest singles of the year so far.

GOOD HIT (3.5/5) — Well well well. The finished version is awesome! Except for her overly autotuned voice. It verges into Rebecca Black territory.

I’M INTO YOU (feat. Lil Wayne)  (4/5) — Love it. Except I don’t like Lil Wayne’s feature, to be honest. I want a solo version of this song.

(WHAT IS) LOVE? (5/5) — Yeah, I’ve given this a five since I’ve been playing this song non-stop for the past fortnight! Probably because I love how they changed its name haha. It’s so dramatic now! What is…LOVE? I’m so glad this song made the final track list because it still sounds as good (if not better) even after a year since its official releaseon The Back Up Plan soundtrack. Plus, it’s no secret that I’ve really been feeling Wynter Gordon this year. I like her original version of this, too.

RUN THE WORLD (4.5/5) — I loved the demo of this song when it leaked. It sounded like some JLo song from the 2000′s. The ones with Ja Rule and LL Cool J. This is classic urban JLo.

PAPI (3/5) — I like it, except I can’t not hear Whine Up by Kat DeLuna in the intro whenever I listen to this. Afterwards, it becomes a standard RedOne track.

UNTIL IT BEATS NO MORE (3.5/5) — Her voice sounds great on this song. An extra half a star for that alone!

ONE LOVE (3/5) — According to Wikipedia this is the only song JLo co-wrote on Love? Yeah, I guess this song is okay…

INVADING MY MIND (3/5) — Honestly, I was dreading listening to this one after the original demo was, as Tamar Braxton would say “a hot mess.com”. Thankfully, the final mix is surprisingly pleasant.

VILLAIN (2.5/5) — Perhaps my least favourite song from this album…so far. Hope its a grower. It sounds like one of those never-ending club songs playing after 1AM on radio stations.

STARTING OVER (3.5/5) — Yeah, it’s cute I guess. I’m obviously running out of things to say.

BONUS TRACKS:

HYPNOTICO (4/5) — This song boasts an all-star line up of celebrity songwriters including RedOne, Lady Gaga, Akon, Claude Kelly and Tami Chynn. It’s a real summer song, which is fitting since that season is coming to America soon. You can listen to Tami’s original version here.

EVERYBODY’S GIRL (3/5) — A bit underwhelming, esepcially after waiting 1 year to hear this in HQ.

CHARGE ME UP (3/5) — V RedOne.

TAKE CARE (3.5/5) — Probably my favourite bonus track. I don’t know why. It’s catchy.

VEN A BAILAR (3/5) — I like this Spanish version, but it’s no Una Noche Mas.

OVERALL:

This is a four out of five star album. Pure class, JLo.

Surprisingly, I think I liked her urban-flavoured songs on this album more than the dance ones. Maybe it’s because I’m so tired of electropop in general. Nonetheless, I think this is JLo’s strongest album since JLo more than ten years ago.

New Charice: Before It Explodes

Charice is finally releasing a new single to follow up her chart-topping top 50 Australian smash hit, Pyramid!

Produced by Bruno Mars, the song is called Before It Explodes. It will apparently be released next week on April 18. You can listen to a clip of her song on Amazon.com. Alexandra Burke and Bruno Mars also have versions of the same song on YouTube, too. Scroll down to listen to them.

According to Charicemania.com, Chazza has collaborated with producers such as ex-Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, Jim Beanz, Sean Garrett and more for her upcoming second international album.

She has also collaborated with former Australian pop singer turned songwriter Leah Haywood. I’ve always wondered what happened to her career. It turns out that Haywood and her husband now successfully write and produce songs for pop starlets like Aly and AJ, Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens.

Meanwhile, Charice’s acting career has continued to develop. The same day Before It Explodes is released on Amazon, the Philippine singer will make her second appearance as Sunshine Corazon on Glee. She also recently landed a role opposite Salma Hayek in the comedy, Here Comes the Boom.

Wynter Gordon…Til Death

Here is Wynter Gordon‘s brand new Australian single to follow up her ARIA no. 1 debut, Dirty Talk:

This remix is really, really good! It’s by Denzal Park (the producers behind one of my favourite local songs of last year, Zoe Badwi‘s Freefallin‘). I can’t wait to hear Wynter’s debut album or the original version of Til Death, for that matter.

S Club Party…Almost 10 Years Later

S Club 7 have briefly reunited after almost 10 years since their split. With this news, plus the rumours that Steps may also be reuniting as well as JLo returning to no. 1, it seems likes its 2001 all over again!

S Club 7 are best known for their cheesetastic bubblegum hits like Don’t Stop Movin’ and S Club Party. In America though, they’re perhaps best known for their only top 10 Billboard hit, Never Had a Dream Come True.

The original line-up of S Club joined together for former bandmate Jon Lee‘s debut performance in Jersey Boys. And man, do they look very, very different:

Fun fact…I remember buying a copy of their debut CD single Bring It All Back. Yes, you can laugh. It was an “enhanced CD” that came with the music video lol. Ah, the days before YouTube and iTunes. It’s funny though, I tried searching for the official video on YouTube/Vevo but apparently copyright has taken it off.

Foolish – Ashanti: A Classic Video Review

Ashanti: “What do you do?”

After re-reading my post on Only U, I went back and watched the hilariously melodramatic video for Ashanti‘s debut single, Foolish (2002).

What more can you want from a video? It has a Goodfellas-inspired motif and features cameos from rappers that were huge in the day. Like Ja Rule.

For me though, I think the best sequence of the video is when Ashanti and her two friends storm some chick’s apartment.

Ashanti goes bezerk, yelling into the intercom furiously. For a moment it looks like there’s gonna be a huge catfight. One of Ashanti’s girlfriends (who rocks a pink weave, no less) even takes her earrings off:

But then it cuts to a scene with Ashanti lying next to her boyfriend as usual. I guess that’s why this song is called Foolish.

Where were you? Where have you been?!

Do you reckon this song/video is a classic of the 2000s decade? In my opinion, yeah…I guess I’d say it is. What about you guys?

March 2011 Trashy Dance-Pop Songs Post

March 2011 looks like it’s gonna be the defining month of the year in terms of trashy pop singles. First, there was Jam (Turn It Up) by Kim Kardashian, then we had the unexpected smash of the year, Friday by Rebecca Black explode all over the internet.

Fortunately for us, they just keep on coming! Here is a small smorgasbord of a few new dance-pop songs, good and bad, poised to join Kim and Rebecca:

WET / NICOLE SCHERZINGER

I can’t wait for Nicole’s debut solo album, Her Name is Nicole Killer Love, although it sounds like Stargate just produced a carbon-copy of Only Girl (In the World) for her with this track.

BUTTERFLIES / ALANA LEE

Thanks to Friday, Ark’s roster of “talents” have gone mainstream. This video has almost reached one million views. I don’t know why. I’m not a fan of this Taylor Swift-lite track. I think the autotune is even worse than Friday.

Kelly returns to dance music (again) with this collaboration. This is okay I guess… I like it better than Motivation.

IN THE DARK / DEV

This is the brand new single from Dev – best known for her hit Like a G6. I’m getting a We Speak No Americano vibe from it, mixed with that annoying song from a few years ago, You Promised Me.

KISS KISS / B. SCOTT

Kim Kardashian and Rebecca Black bow down. YouTube celebrity B. Scott has released March’s most enjoyable debut single with Kiss Kiss.
